"I'm all voice from head to toe; anything that affects my mind or body affects my singing."

Ernestine Schumann-Heink

I believe that everyone has a voice to proclaim themselves. Many of us have voices that are talented to proclaim musically. Many have a talented voice outside of music that is enhanced by finding a musical voice.

The technique that I teach is straightforward (low grounded breath; low, released larynx, i.e. released jaw/tongue; Italianate resonant vowel placement). It is not simple to master, although the terminology is simply stated above. The process is a sensory one, but not just the sense of hearing. It is the sense of feeling where your voice exists in your body.

I do not make promises about career outcomes because over this I have no control. But if you master your voice, you can have much more control over your career outcomes than ever before.

Some people will have the voice for lullabies for their newborn, some for cabaret, some for Broadway, some for oratorio, concert and lieder, operetta or the greatest of all challenges, opera. All require skills of mental and vocal focus. The difference is the level of time, energy and training separating each of the ascending vocal steps in musical development. It doesn't mean that these skills are necessarily successfully interchangeable once you have achieved a higher level of development, although many are. There are trade-offs. If you have a voice of substance, you are fortunate but have the greater challenge, because for most of you, the journey to master your instrument is a wonderful exploration of your own self worth and its proclamation to the audience you seek.

Having coached with the late, great Walter Taussig on several roles, and knowing that nothing escapes a good conductor's eyes and ears, I understand the purpose of vocal training as strengthening and conditioning the vocal apparatus to provide an evenness of scale, breath flexibility and natural vowel articulation before the student leaves the studio to face the world of auditions, conductors and audiences. Of course, at some point, the student must fly on her/his own!

I believe in consistency in attendance at lessons (my consistency as well as the students!). The more frequently you have lesson re-enforcement, the faster you will feel/see results.

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. When I am not notified before that time, you, the student, will be responsible for payment of the lesson, unless rescheduled within the same week.

I enjoy teaching male and female voices of all categories. You must be 15 years or older to begin private study. (Special cases considered.)
