"The vital, idiomatic musical direction of John Matheson made this an "Aida" Londoners, as well as New Yorkers, have every cause to remember." Aida - Covent Garden THE SUNDAY TIMES
Conductor John Matheson (1928-2009) was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. As a young man he attended the Royal College of Music in London, later studying and working with Carlo Maria Giulini. He began his professional music career in England where he was associated, in particular, with Sadler's Wells Opera (later to become English National Opera) and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he was assistant to Georg Solti. Solti later appointed him as Senior Resident Conductor at Covent Garden. |
